Amy Moritz, '95, challenges you to light up the FCSC scoreboard during #GivingTuesdayatBonas
I
started following the St. Bonaventure women's basketball managers on Twitter
because (a) I am a former Bona women's basketball manager and (b) the account
was hilarious. It took me back to my days at Bona’s, and reminded me that along
with my major in journalism/mass communication I also have a minor in laundry.
(So. Much. Laundry.)
Around the time I started following them, I noticed a
fan-driven social media campaign in the college hockey world. Tagged "From
Top Shelf to Food Shelf" fans made up their own pledge based on their
favorite college hockey team and then donated to a local food pantry. (For
example: For every goal scored, they would donate a food item. Or for every
save a goalie made, they would donate a dollar.) It was organic and unofficial,
but it was an amazing idea that I loved.
So
when the women's team managers started posting about their annual game against
the men's team managers, I had an inspiration sparked by that college hockey
campaign. For every point the teams scored, I would donate a dollar to the Warming
House. I
don't know if it made it fun for the managers, but it made it fun for me and
was a way to both celebrate my experience at Bonaventure with the women's
basketball team and give back to a community that I called home for eight
years.
That's
a nice enough story, but what drove me to do this again each year was the
response I received from the Warming
House. I
mailed them a check with a note about my donation in honor of the women's
basketball managers. In return, I received a two-page, handwritten letter from
a student involved in running the Warming
House. It
was personal and informative. And while there are MANY great causes to support,
this response felt so heartfelt and sincere that it reminded how much small
things done with great love really do matter — not just to those who may need
help in reaching their basic physical needs, but for all of us doing our best
to be fully present for ourselves and for others.
Here's
to hoping that my Bona women's basketball managers light up the scoreboard this
season!
